Reflection for 2011

Kiaora Josh,

It was great to see you giving Darryn a challenge in chess this week! I hope you continue playing once you get to high school. You will have to see if they have a team and get them to the tournament in Dunedin!

You are stepping up to the challenge in maths, with our scale model of the band rotunda. Do you think we have scaled it correctly, and the puppets will fit?

Today @ Enrich 15-11-11

Today at Enrich we started by doing Talent Development, I do maths. We were using measurement that we already made when when we measured the band rotunda and we were converting measurements. We made every 10 metres into 1 metre (10:1). Then after we had a chess break and I had to face Darryn because I didn't get challenged by anyone else. I was losing until he touched the Knight and had to move it, allowing me to take his Queen.Then we split into 2 groups, one group did Habits of mind and the other did debating and then we would switch over after 20 minutes or so.Then it was lunch and after we continued with our must do and picks for the afternoon.

Today @ Enrich 8-11-11

Today Enrich we started by doing our Talent Development. I do Maths as mine. We we converting sizes using metres, centremetres, and millimeters. For example 1 metre would be 5 centremetres. Then we got split into 2 groups and my group did P4C which was about if we felt weird in different situations with people around us. Then we did a habits of mind workshop. We learnt about thinking interdependently which is thinking in a group or team, and another one was striving for accuracy which is always trying to get better.

Today at Enrich 25-10-2011

Today at Enrich we got to choose our Talent Development. We got to choose out of Maths or Science. I chose Maths. For Maths we went to Queens Park to measure the band rotunder to make a scale model of it. We also had to draw a sketch of it in our workbooks. When we got back it was morning tea. Then we started our Must-do can-dos. They are a list of learning activities we can do. We have to do a certain amount of work over the fortnight.

2 stars and a wish for term 3 (reflection

One of my stars is that we got to enter our documentaries in the MADE awards and that I got to go to the South Island chess competition with my Enrich chess team and winning all my games there as well as the tournament. But my wish is that we could enter more competitions like MADE awards.

Today at Enrich 20-9-11

Today at Enrich we started by doing our talent development and we lost our footage we took on Friday and don't know where it went. But we started editing by putting all our footage that we do have into the actual documentary.We then put our voiceovers in to make it look and sound better. Then we played a game of leader board chess. I won my game and got back in 3rd. Then we continued editing our documentary, this time we had to put in the title and credits.

Today at Enrich 20-9-11

Today at Enrich 13-9-11

Today at Enrich we started by doing our talent development, I am doing documentary making. We first learnt how to use iMovie and how to import and delete things from it. Then my group went to the big umbrella to film some facts about it. Like it's a sundial and is on the same angle as the earth's axis. It was hard because it was cold and windy and there were lots of cars going past. Then we organized a script for Friday, when we will go to the water tower and museum to do more filming.

You are well practised at interviewing people after the interviews your group have done in the last couple of weeks! I have been pleased to see that you have set yourselves a high standard, and have re-recorded when you know that the footage wasn't as good as it could have been. Keep up the high standard of work!

Today at enrich 6-9-11

Today at Enrich as always we started by playing a game of leader board chess. I won my game. Then after that we did our talent development and Tim Boys came in and we got to interview him about how important the Southland Stags are in Southland and how he felt about being in the second division. He then told us how he felt when they won the Ranfurly Shield. Then we had Russell Beck come in and tell us about the Big Umbrella. He told us loads of information about it like its a sun dial and shows the Invercargill time and the position of stars. Then we went to Queens Park to film all of the interesting things like the winter garden and the castle and we also filmed ourselves as we said facts about Queens Park.

Today at Enrich 30-8-2011

Today at Enrich we had Colin Anderson from the museum come in, so we could interview him about the museum. He told us lots of interesting facts like it is the biggest pyramid in the southern hemisphere. We had to interview him 3 times because the first time someone walked in front of the camera and the second time there was to much noise in the background. Then we imported it in to a laptop.Then we researched facts about the icons in Invercargill. Then after lunch I did P4C. It was about things that are possible and impossible. It was hard and I had to think alot. Then I did goal setting. We had to set goals for this term that we weren't good at last term.

Last week at Enrich

Last week at Enrich we played chess and I won my game. Then afterwards we started our Talent Development. We organized an interview with Mr.Anderson, he is the teacher in the museum classroom. Then we had Kate Buchanon come in to teach us about interviewing someone and how to make them feel comfortable so they give better answers. We also learnt what kind of questions to ask and to always change your angle when questioning someone.

Today at Enrich

Today at Enrich we started by playing a game of chess and I won my game but I almost lost.Then not long after we went into our talent development groups and discussed what our documentary is going to be about. It had to be about Southland so my group chose to do a documentary about the attractions in Southland. We also were going to ring SIT so we could go there to get any tips about making a documentary or editing it.

The first day of term 3

Today at Enrich we started by playing leader board chess and I won my game. Then we got to choose what we want to do out of documentary making, art or story telling. I decided to go with documentary making. The documentary we make will be entered into the MADE awards. We started watching the documentaries that won in the previous years so we could get the idea of making a documentary. Then we split into groups and did tasks about documentaries to see what makes a good documentary.

Teacher comment

Josh this year you have developed some great working relationships with a range of new and returning students. You have worked hard to develop time management skills that have meant you have completed the set must dos can dos, as well as your chess tournament project. You are establishing a positive attitude towards the challenges that are set for you, keep it up!

Today at Enrich

Today at Enrich we started by playing leader board chess and I won my game. Then we were doing our passion project. We are organising a chess tournament and it will be held at Donovon Primary. All the money raised will go to a school called Discovery 1 in Christchurch. It will be for books and things used for school because of all the damage the earthquake has caused. We also finished writing our E-mail for the schools participating in the chess tournament.

What I think it means to be gifted

To me being gifted means that you can think and learn more than most people expect. I think it's also when you can think to a higher level than people who aren't gifted and that you have a more creative mind. Also that you can figure things out quicker than most of the other people. Did you know that on this week it is gifted week?

Chess at Enrich

Last week I did a chess workshop and we learnt about forks, pins and skewers.

A skewer is when when you put someone in check and they have a piece behind the king.

A pin is when you can kill a strong piece and the king is behind that piece and a fork is when you get someone in check and a strong piece is behind the king.

At Enrich we have a chess leader board and I have been at the top for 6 or 7 weeks.

Philosophy for children

Today at Enrich we did a workshop called P4C. It stands for Philosophy for children. In philosophy we look at things that people have been arguing for, for years. We got asked "Can you lie to yourself?" I think you can lie to yourself, even though you already know that your lying. In the past P4C's we looked at questions like "Would you choose wealth or friendship?"

P4C makes you think a lot, because you have to think about the answers, even when you think you've come to a decision, because the other kids in the group have lots of ideas that make you change your mind.

My interactions prior knowledge

This is my prior knowledge for interactions it shows my change in thinking about interactions. Before i only knew that an interaction was two people moving at the same time.

my multiple intelligence

This is the multiple intelligence survey that I did. It shows my strengths and weaknesses about my thinking. It also shows my musical skills, my nature skills and my people skills. We did these as a task for affective domain which is learning about giftedness.
